The assignment criteria are all explained via this link and the site, you must follow these very closely in order to produce the work to meet the criteria for each. Assignment Brief What exactly makes a good portrait? From the earliest days of photography the camera has been used to record images of people, and in those days, having just taken over from portrait painters, ‘a good likeness’ was the usual aim. However, a good portrait can go beyond being a simple likeness to express something about the sitter, such as an aspect of their personality, their world, their thoughts or their lifestyle. Within this assignment you will be looking at historical and modern contemporary photographers to inform and inspire you to produce versions of your own. At all times you will be looking at your research and trying similar shots for yourself. Then we will compare what you have taken and see what went well and why, and also what didn't so you can improve for the next shoot that you do. Research Working in your Blogger websites, determine and identify useful information, i.e. subject matter on the theme for study, examples of suggested and personally chosen artists, your own photographs. Analyse, organise and manipulate your research, i.e. evidence of development of ideas - visual thinking, through studies and exploration and experimentation with media and ideas. Research should be about identifying value that you can add to your own work, so we will during this assignment look at how to discover that from the images you look at. You can start your research with the following and extend further and find some of your own; Steve Pyke, Annie Liebovitz, Tom hunter, Richard Avedon, Jason Christopher, Julia Margaret Cameron, Josef Karsh, Sarah Jones, Edward Steichen, David Bailey, Arnold Newman, Irving Penn, Diane Arbus, Mary Ellen Mark, Rankin, Nadav Kander It is also expected that you have youtube videos of these photographers at work, as this will give you vital clues as to the cameras they use, plus the lighting techniques used in a variety of different situations to give certain results. Can you all upload 4 videos into your websites of each photographer you look at along with analysis of what you like about their work. You are required to research 6 photographers and write a minimum of 300 words for each along with 6 images of their work on your website The type of words you must use are to explain what you are seeing, for information on this read the blog about, 'How to blog and what to include', on this website. Once you have an inspirational image, show it to me and then we can work together in producing your response to it. I will help you with the studio, kit and lighting in order for you to produce your portraits.
