UNIT 9 – PHOTOGRAPHY TECHNIQUES
UNIT 10 – ANIMATION TECHNIQUES
Success in this assignment will meet the following criteria:
Refer to the Tutor Website section on these units.
Lecturer/s:
S.DAVIES
Student Name:
Assignment Aims:
The aims will be to meet all the criteria as outlined by the two units which are downloadable
via the Tutor website and also via this link;
Please make sure that you only view Units 9 and 10 ‘only’.
The assignment criteria are all explained via this link and the site, you must follow these
very closely in order to produce the work to meet the criteria for each.

Assignment Brief:
The idea will be that all the students have to work on a set build or scene which will
then require to be lit in the studio. This set build will have to be at certain scale with
a range of objects or characters . A script and storyboard will also be required to
reinforce the storyline, this will also need to have sound effects and music that will
suit the theme.

The set will be designed and built using different areas of the college including 3D
to create and style to suit their chosen theme. Each student will produce their own
work and present all findings and research on their own blog site. All students are
required to explore using other creative areas within the college in order to complete
this assignment. This will mean that areas such as 3D, Woodwork, Music Technology
and any others that you feel may increase the creativity of the work that you produce.

You may also wish to resolve this assignment via flat 2D images that could be cut outs
or drawings and animated in a creative and interested way to suit your theme.

You will be required to investigate photography, media and techniques in the context
of stop frame photography and animation. The concept and ideas will need to be
drawn and planned in a storyboard. The type of lens used and the scale, perspective
and size of the images must be clearly annotated throughout.

Test movies will need to be uploaded onto the Blogger website. All students will be
using editing software to compile their movies, they will be encouraged to prepare
props, backgrounds and wardrobe and styling. 3D objects should be used to add
interest along with unusual backgrounds. The time that these will take to be
constructed will need to be planned and managed properly and in a timely fashion.
Creative use of daylight or studio lighting should be incorporated at all times. Study
from the origins of animation, as objects, people or both can be used to meet the
criteria on this course.

You will all be introduced to the photography studio and how the studio and its
lighting can alter and creatively affect the work that you produce. The studio can
provide you with either flash or more likely continuous lighting with which to work.

All ideas and storyboards are to be done in sketches on paper these
must be then scanned and uploaded onto your own website.

The camera used will be a digital still camera as used by Nick Park and his Aardman
studios, the software will be 'I can animate' which is an easy to use piece of software.
The lighting will be via continuous lighting which is cold and will not affect the
Claymation figures that you might want to work creatively with. It can also be useful
for periods of long use as in stop frame animation, where heat could build up and
affect the materials you are using.

Research:
The whole of the research that you gather will need to be evidenced in your own
Blogger Website, this will allow you to present your work over the internet. This
can include photography, video, audio and written reflective writing. The research
will have to span from early animations and flip book work, through to more
complex use of people and objects in still frame photography and video/film.
The research should at all times include a selection of 5 photographs and 5 videos
to thoroughly evidence the photographers, artists or animators that you study.
You are required to research a minimum of 5 different photographers, artists and
animators.
Suggested areas to research;

Walt Disney
Hanna Barbera
Pixar
Nick Cambl AKA Grey Scale Gorilla
Peppa Pig
Charlie and Lola
Saul Bass
Zoetropes
Flip books
Art of the title google it
Motionographer Google it

You can look at cartoons, animated films, flip books, computer games, movies,
music videos etc,  etc, for your inspiration, but all the time you must evidence what
you find and load it onto your 'blogger website' along with a critical analysis of what
your thoughts are concerning ideas and what you want to explore and try for yourself.

The reflective writing needs to be done critically and using vocabulary that is
befitting of your thoughts and ideas. Advice and guidance on how best to do this
will be provided.
Please refer to the How to Blog and what to write blog entry on the Tutor website
for help with this.

Materials:
The main benefit of this method of teaching and learning with the Blogger website
is that you will not be required to print or use a sketchbook. We will encourage the
uploading and use of videos to your blog.
Videos will primarily be shot on still digital cameras which will be provided from
our camera store.

Required for Assessment:
You are required to produce blog entries on your website that are clearly labelled
against criteria each time so that you know why you are producing them . The label
system will provide a clear indicator as to the work that you have produced and
what criteria they are aimed at. In this way you can identify which criteria are not
met thoroughly enough and ones that are met sufficiently and can be left alone.
The stop frame images will be shot with a normal digital SLR camera and then the
images will be sequenced and editing to sound effects and music in order to
complement your chosen theme.

1.     A theme or concept in which your animation will take place, with clear
drawings in Photoshop or free drawn (scanned and uploaded onto your website).
2.     Mind mapping and sketching of ideas, characters, objects
3.     A flat scenario which includes a background and moving simple 2D characters.
Often shot via a rostrum camera.
4.     A stop frame movie with simple objects, people or characters.
5.     A more complex set build to include 3D characters with suitable lighting.
6.     A comprehensive set of blogs which include research of other artists,
photographers and animators (see what is required for assessment below).

The website that you produce will also include stop frame animation videos that
you have created. These will need to be edited in either iMovie or Final Cut software
and then uploaded to your site.

Assessment Method:
Observation of technical skills. Production of written notes/terms and evaluations.
Finished practical project and group appraisal / evaluation of work.
See marking and grading criteria on the Tutor website. All images and videos must
relate consistently and coherently to the themes selected.
All work must be referenced back to sources, books and authors. Work has to be
your own and can’t simply be downloaded or cut and paste from other peoples
work (plagiarism).

Assessment and Grading:
The Tutor support website contains detailed information on the assignment brief with
grading information and criteria. The marking criteria will cover pass, merit or
distinction, as per unit 9 & 10. Please refer to the Tutor site for exact information
regarding the assessment and grading via the unit criteria.

perspective and size of the images and objects / people must be clearly annotated throughout.

Each student will produce their own work and present all findings and research on
their own blog site. All students are required to produce a stop frame series of photographs that can be placed into iMovie or Final Cut. The movie must contain objects, people or both as per the example videos shown.

Test movies will need to be uploaded onto the Blogger website. All students will be
using editing software to compile their movies, they will be encouraged to prepare
props, backgrounds and wardrobe and styling. The time that these will take to be
constructed will need to be planned and managed properly and in a timely fashion.
You have to  resolve this assignment on location, ideally somewhere creative and
appropriate to your theme

You could just as likely be working with people and animating them in interesting
scenarios and situations. These can be themed and styled to suit the message you
wish to convey, also music of your choice can be added to complement the mood
of the overall final stop frame video.

Research:
The whole of the research that you gather will need to be evidenced in your own
Blogger Website, this will allow you to present your work over the internet. This
can include photography, video, audio and written reflective writing.

The research should at all times include a selection of videos from Youtube, when you
have added these into your work you must write about them underneath. This written work
should be about what it is you like about the video, its use of light and colour, perspective.
The scale of the people or objects within it, the use of the theme to create a certain style or
mood. Also music and how it is used to complement the theme.

You are required to research a minimum of 5 different photographers who use stop frame
photography as part of their work. I want you to see who you can find to begin with and
then we will look at other photographers together to help explore your research further.

The reflective writing needs to be done often and using vocabulary that is
about your thoughts and ideas, problems and things that went well. What would you differently
next time in order to improve your work further.
Please refer to the How to Blog and what to write blog entry on the Tutor website
