In this area you will find a week by week scheme for all of these sessions. These will appear in 6 week blocks throughout the year.
The context statement for this class is explained on another tab section of this website. Whilst this may look different from a normal scheme of work it operates in the same way but is far more interactive and responsive to the students teaching and learning. It is a student responsive live curriculum which works better than it being just on paper in a file in a staff room.
Research and Development
This course requires research and development of ideas themes and concepts based on ideas drawn from the research that you do. It is vital that this planning and preparation is done and evidenced thoroughly on your blog. All ideas if they are drawn or sketched will need to be scanned and uploaded to your websites.
Remember that the research that you gather must be critically analysed, this means that you must write about what you think about what you have put onto your website. To do this you must talk about what you see and could influence your ideas.
You will need to gather around 5 different photographers, artists or animators you will need to write about who they are and what they have done. To support this you will need to evidence on your blogs a minimum of 5 different videos, animations or photographs that you find useful or creatively stimulating.
For the first part of this course you are required to make a flat 2D rostrum animation with cut out scenes and characters or objects of your choice. You may even mix people and objects within your animation video.
When you research you must write a biography of who you have found, you can't just 'cut and paste' any of this work it has to be free written by yourself.
Based on what you discover today you will need to bring objects or items to start with next week. In the next session you will be using still cameras in the photography studio and a rostrum camera. A full introduction to the photography studio will mean after this you can start to use this area for your animation.
Because animation takes so much time to set up and do you will have to get moving on this really quickly, to enable this to happen you really have to get your research, planning and preparation up and running now.
A rostrum camera will be set up in this room next week for some people who want to produce flat 2D animations, the studio will be free to use. You can if you want work with a set up at home and develop this frequently away from college, because as you will find you can animate anything for this course.
Also we will cover how every blog that you do must be labelled with the criteria reference number that you aiming to achieve. In this way you will be able to take control of the work that you produce and why you produce it. As shown in the table below;
It has to be remembered that these schemes of work and lesson plans are fluid and always evolving in response to change and adaptation, and as such will always be in a state of flux in order to be learner responsive. In this way they are always slightly incomplete.
Week 1
Aims of the Session

Assessment Strategies
The assessment of work is aided by the self tracking and self labelling of any work that is produced. This is vital in understanding 'where' you are within the curriculum as it is delivered. And allows for accurate and timely adaptation or targeting of criteria that may have not been met. And it also allows confirmation to the students as to what they have achieved as well. All of this self tracking is commented on as the students progress in a very strong formative manner on a regular and written evidenced way appearing automatically next to their work on their blog websites.
Feedback Strategies
The whole system of using blogs online allows the work of all students to be viewed by not only the tutor but also by all the students themselves. This allows transparency as to how students are achieving an thus adequate intervention time to allow improvements to happen to the students work.
All the students can leave comments on each others work which can build a team ethic of helping each other to learn (peer to peer). This evidence is written and S.M.A.R.T and also automatically dated and timed.
Consolidation and Evaluation
This takes place after every session where the class recaps and reviews what they have done, identifying key features and resources. This takes the form of written evidence in their blogs, which depending on whether we can access computers directly, if not then the evaluation and consolidation is done in written form when next able to access a computer (either in class or at home). If we are working in the photography studio then this is often not possible until we are back in a classroom.

P4
Outline and Development of Learning Activities
For this session you will be split into 2 groups , working in the photography studio until break then swapping over. In the studio we will be working on one set up, hopefully someone will of prepared 2D cut outs or objects ready to use for this session, if not we will improvise.
The group that is in the class will be working on their ideas and research with the computers or the laptops they have been asked to bring in. Sketching ideas on paper, preparing their 2D rostrum animation, etc..etc...cut outs etc,
Research will be done initially to get some ideas on how this might happen, and all of the images and videos will be evidenced onto their own websites.
Also this week will be based around consolidating what you learnt last week and adding more complex gadgets to each website, such as Recent Comments, etc..
Another part of the course will be to set up and link everyone together via Following, including all students linked to the Tutor website for continued support throughout the course.
All students will be asked to look and read through with them the assignment paper and what is expected of them throughout the course to get the best out of it.
Set up the websites so that they can access them via their smart phones, and encourage the students to blog openly with any thoughts and ideas out of college hours as extended learning.

Week 3
Aims of the Session
This session will include continuing to create a 2 dimensional flat bed rostrum style animation by cutting out magazines, comics etc and animating the cut outs to get used to the camera and the frame rate capture required to create a working stop frame scene.
Objectives of the Session
P1, M1
P2, M2
P3, M3
P4, M4
Outline and Development of Learning Activities
Actual research proper will start today if not done in previous weeks, all research done of artists, photographers and film makers will need to be evidenced very clearly within every blog that you produce. Starting to use critical vocabulary to accurately describe what you are seeing is vital in the understanding of what creative or technical value you can add to your own exploratory work.
This will be work of your own based on the ideas and practice we did in the studio last week, you will need to be doing research, or planning your shoot with a series of simple stick drawings for figures and shapes just to show what you intend to do. Some of you may of done what was asked which was to prepare for this session by cutting out what you needed or bringing objects to use in the studio.
And you should be finishing off what we did last week, getting the images you took and putting them into iMovie to make short animations, you may want to add sound effects or music to suit your theme, etc...
This week is over to you really, you will either be actually preparing your cut outs, backgrounds, drawings, flip books, whatever it is during this session. You have all had the studio induction so you can be working in the studio independently or in small groups doing you animation. I have the images from last week and I will be bringing it around to everyone.

Outline and Development of Learning Activities
The animation of action figures will prove useful now as it means the characters haven't got to be made, which could slow the project down. The poseable figures will be used in the photography studio with the 'Green Screen' to allow the students to edit out the background when editing the videos in Final Cut editing software.
The students have all had a previous studio induction and so can all use the studio safely. The action figures will allow the students to produce a video to music as well, so they can edit to a specific track of their choice.
Continued research and development alongside practical still photography and animation.
Finally during the session today I need to see the amount of research, written work, images and videos the group have managed to produce in order the pass this course. The animation and photography course will finish at christmas.

Week 6
Aims of the Session
To recap over the whole of the student work so far with feedback given via the blogs as written comments.
Objectives of the Session
Outline and Development of Learning Activities
This session will be all about how much work students have produced, or not. They will all work on their blogs and write about what they have done practically and also what they have actually evidenced on their blogs.
The labelling of work produced against criteria will also need to happen in order for the students to understand how this works and all the benefits of knowing where you are within the course will be discussed.
Reflective writing and blogs will be encouraged throughout this session. Editing of any videos will need to also take place following on from the last session, also music tracks will also be required to be brought in.
The most important aspect of this session is how much work has actually been produced over the last 6 weeks and recapping over their work as we haven't always had access to a classroom with enough computers.

P2, M2, D2
P3, M3, D3
P4, M4, D4
Outline and Development of Learning Activities
We will be finishing off the green screen animations that we started last term, the editing in final cut has to be screen grabbed in various stages of completion and these then uploaded to your blogs to write about what you did.
All of the work you have done so far needs to be evidenced on your blogs.
Also you need to finish the outdoor animations that you did before half term and put them into final cut and add some music and sound effects. Andy will help you with this while I go into the studio to shoot some more green screen animations with the other half of the group.
The group will be split into 2 as per before half term,
Remember the key element to this course is to record on your blogs what you are doing, ideas, thoughts and plans must always be done after or during each session on your blog websites.

Outline and Development of Learning Activities
After all the different sessions we have done I have noticed that in general across the board you are not writing about what you have done or uploading the images that you have taken onto your blogs.
This has to improve by the next class and you can ask me for images, other students in group may have them, chase these up and add them all to your blog with a title for each new blog.
For Next Week I expect that you have added these to all of your blogs;
1. Find all the images you have taken on this course and upload them to your blog for each session.
2. Write about what you did and what equipment you used, for most shoots we used the Canon 5d with a Cambo camera stand or tripod. Find out what these are and add photos where needed in your blogs.
2a. The flat 2D animations cut outs we did, where are the images from this shoot, find them and add to your work with written explanations. Also these short animations should of been made into simple movies in iMovie to show what you have done. Ask if you are not sure how to do this.
3. The 'Green Screen Shoot' we did, where are your images and written work, what about the session you did with Andy editing in Final Cut, what is this software can you add 'screen grabs' into your blog about what you have done. What did you do in the studio, write about it, thoughts, ideas, problems, successes, along with the kit that you used to do it. What is green screen, look on the internet and find examples and videos that show it working and add to your blog.
4. The 'Halloween Shoot' needs writing about in each stage, plus where are the photos you took, what kit was used, what have you done with the images, compare to any visual research that you have done.
5. What did you do with Kate and the makeup and what happened, how did you do it, were you pleased with the results.
6. The outdoor shoot we did with the portable 'Bowens Gemini lighting', this needs a blog and written work and the photos you took.
7. As well as outside location work you have also worked in the photography studio, this needs writing about as well. Kit equipment, the portrait session we did, kit used, etc, write about everything you did.
8. You also looked at ISO, shutter speed and f stops with me last week , I need a blog about each with written work to support it.
9. Also the outdoor action figure animation that we did outside this needs to be written about and images added. Then you need to start to put these images into Final Cut or iMovie over the next sessions.
This needs to be done by next week so I can see exactly how much you have caught up where required
I have looked at all of your blogs this week and left comments. Do as much as you can in this session and the rest away from college in time for next week.

Outline and Development of Learning Activities
This week we will be using Final Cut editing software to put together all the different images you have taken with the digital cameras. The images will be loaded into the timeline of the software and edited selectively to make a small stop frame movie.
Andy and myself will be running the two different groups and then the students swap over after break.
The edit can be from several sources as over the next few weeks these all need editing and finishing before xmas;
1. The green screen animation we did in the studio
2. The flat 2D cut out animations
3. The action figure animations you did out on location
4. The stop frame photography of yourselves / objects
The edit can include suitable music and sound effects, also we will look at adding any more effects to the visual aspect of the edit.
The final movies will be exported as large for dvd and small for your blogs. This will be done by putting the exported movie from Final Cut through iMovie via sharing.
The group is split into two which is rota either side of a break,
The other group will be doing the following then swap over so that they both cover the same,

Week 12
Aims of the Session
This session will be about how the 'Xbox 360 in used with its Kinect System' and how the students own animation can interact with the software to gain a further understanding of how 'Motion Capture' operates
Objectives of the Session
The objective will be to experience and evidence how the 'Kinect' motion software allows the kinetic movement of the students to directly influence and become part of the animation of the computer game.
Also the objective is to meet the criteria for the course (see chart above to translate these criteria).

Outline and Development of Learning Activities
The class will be held in the photography studio and will allow us to have adequate space in which to safely perform this session. A lot of space is required as the students will be using the motion controllers and moving around over a large area. This space is both safe and fit for purpose for such sessions.
The students have already been in the studio many times and have had a health and safety induction.
The studio and the xbox 360 will already be set up and it has been PAT tested to ensure it is safe to use in the college.
The students have covered a wide variety of animation on this course from flip books, 2D flat rostrum, articulate action figures, wooden manakin on a green screen and animating themselves and objects on location, and motion capture of people into computer games. So it is a logical progression that we now cover how they can become part of the games themselves.
In the near future the applications for motion capture and human interactive software will have very broad applications in education, science, medical and manufacturing sectors. And so this session has many and far reaching research possibilities and extension opportunities after this session.
The system whilst being used is also capable of taking photographs of students while they are using the xbox 360 via the Kinect, these can be used afterwards in a timeline of an edit to create an animation of the students using the software.
Also the lesson will be filmed on a flip camera so that the students can watch back and animate images from the session in an animation via Final Cut Software in the next session.

Today is all about an up on your feet fun session rather than just a research exercise in the classroom (which will follow in a subsequent session).
Most of the students will take an active part in the session however some may choose not to take part and watch if they are a bit shy. The games featured include action and adventure, sport, dance and keep fit.

Location: UC102
Number of Students: 21 All registered and Lanyard Checks to complete
Subject : Animation Unit 10
Course: Creative Media Level 2
Date 8.11.11
Aims of the Session
This session will be all about evidencing the previous session we did in the photography studio, where we used the motion capture methods of the Xbox Kinect system to explore animation and how kinectic motion it is translated into software characters.
Later we will also be ensuring that all work has been properly labelled via the labels gadget and the criteria table we used in previous sessions.

Outline and Development of Learning Activities
After the session in the studio in the last session we will be evidencing what you did in your own blogger websites. This will include doing the following;
1. Get the video from the flip cameras that were used on the day of me, add this into final cut so you can make a small movie from it. This shows how your movements were used to move the character in the software and can now be used on their own to make an animation movie.
2. Research Motion Capture and all its relevant uses in sports, science, education and music, plus broad applications in medical and manufacturing sectors.Plus try to find other areas where Kinect is used in the context of Kinectic Motion Capture and add Youtube clips and images to your own blogs.
3. Write a blog about what you did in the studio and did you enjoy it, thoughts and ideas based around what you did. Also add images of the games covers we used plus any others you can find on the internet.
4. And can you come up with an idea for what this animation system could be used for and write about it within you blogs
5. Also check over your work if you have done all of this as next week is the last session, all work has to be labelled and completed by then.
5. Also check over your work if you have done all of this as next week is the last session, all work has to be labelled and completed by then.
After break the groups swap over and we will look at how to label your work to meet criteria again and check that that is up to date as well as we did this in a previous session and continue with the above in order to keep adding more to their work.To make sure that all student work is self tracked and labelled so that students have a self awareness of work completed and work outstanding. In this way the students can smart target their criteria in order to strive to improve their work. The labels are automatically stacked on their websites right next to their work.
Please be aware as we are short of computers in this group to work alongside each other in a constructive manner until you can swap over at break time to complete this work.
Laptops have been requested several times to all teaching and learning to continue for all, but these have not yet arrived for the students as we have WIFI for them to take advantage of to help them.
